Subject: ANOTHER WARRIOR HIS DUTY DONE CHARLIE MCKENZIE 4 RAR
RIP (1/2011)
TO ALL,
Sad
news from Allan Price and Bob Meehan, this is a particularly sad
notice then usual due to the circumstances of Charle's passing:
Dear members,
I have been informed overnight by many people that Charlie and
Valda McKenzie were both killed in a motor vehicle accident near
Inverell NSW yesterday whilst returning from the 4 RAR Reunion 2011.
many of the messages included great outpourings of grief and emotion
on losing two wonderful people. Charlie served with D Company 4 RAR
on both it's tours of South Vietnam and retired as a Sergeant.
Charlie and his wonderful wife Valda were staunch supporters of the
4 RAR Association and were always great company. My last time with
them was when I hugged both of them and told them that we would see
each other again soon.
I don't have any more details at this stage but will attempt to
keep all informed. Could you please pass this sad information to
those who do not have email access?
Rest in peace old mates;
I have just been informed by Bob Meehan that Charlie and Val
were killed somewhere between Inverell and Glen Innes. Apparently
the car hit a tree and then rolled into a creek. From all reports
death was instantaneous. Bob has been liaising with the McKenzie
family and will keep us all informed as details are released on the
location of the funeral service etc. As far as we know at the
moment, the the funeral service will be conducted at Bingara NSW
which is between Moree and Inverell, some 38 kilometres south of of
Warialda and probably next week.

Living alone and not having someone to share the grief of
loosing two very dear friends who you had just spent a fantastic
time together is not the nicest feeling, but I found comfort in my
photo album tonight. An album of great memories of times shared
between a family others outside the military would never know or
understand. Over 40 years of good times, some bad times , but most of
all the times we laughed at things .Charlie and Tassie were the
old hands that got me through my time in Delta company and saw
that I came home.He also made sure he cleaned me out of any money I
had first with his Crown and Anchor game. The two years I spent in
the army were the most rewarding of my 62 years so far.My life has
been enriched by the friendship Charlie and Val gave me.They loved
each other, they were best friends and above all they were our
friends.I'm so proud they were part of my family.I love them both.
REST in PEACE my dear friends.Bob

Alex firstly let me say how nice it is to talk to you again.
With the lack of contact I thought you may have gone fishing

Secondly, Last week, Wednesday to be exact, Cpl Geoffrey
James (Geoff) Parsons was buried in Karrakatta cemetery WA
after suffering a Heart Attack.
Geoff served in the Battalion during the first tour of
Vietnam, firstly as the Private Clerk in Support Company
then as the Cpl Clerk of D Coy and finally as part of the
pay office in BHQ. He was a great guy softly spoken but a
good soldier.

Subject: FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR DAVE HITCHINS
"Crazy Horse" David HITCHINS
will be cremated at Beresfield, Crematorium,(just off the end of the
F3 near Newcastle) following a service commencing at 10.30.(Please
arrange to be there by 1000 for the meet and greet) on THURSDAY
27th January 2011.
Following the service,the family
have invited all those attending, to attend Dave's "wake" at Karuah
RSL, about 20 minutes up the Pacific Highway near Williamtown.
Arrangements will be published
in Fridays Newcastle paper (Herald I think) and a WA paper.
A RAAF Padre from Williamtown
will be officiating at the service.
The family will start the
Eulogy, but any of our members who wish, may say a few words , but
let me know if you would like to be included,so that we can have the
names in the handout, and they request we limit it to just a few
minutes each, with a maximum of 4 speakers from the 36 Squadron era,
PLUS, they would like it light hearted and humorous.I'll probably
say a quick burst about how we ended up with "Sure" as our motto.
The Association will be
providing a wreath on behalf of ALL our members, and a "table
runner", which will carry the squadron crest and Dave's photo, so
all who attend can sign, and it will be presented to the family,
(daughters Jenny and Robyn) after the service.
Dave apparently didn't like the
RSL, so they won't be in attendance, but Colleen and I will provide
sprigs of Rosemary for those who wish to say a final "goodbye" to
Dave, and place them on his coffin.
I'm sure Dave would like to look
down on us dressed "smart casual", with medals optional of
course.(or as he told me when he sent me off to Canberra for lunch
with the GG,"Get rid of those pointy toed shoes, stovepipe trousers
and narrow tie..AND, have a haircut!".
Thanks to Harvie Ritchie, who
has advised a lot of others not on my list, and I've informed Jockey
Fordyce and Harry Leslie.
Thank you all,
Cheers,
Rags

Our mate Ernie is on life support in the Intensive Care Unit of
Redcliffe Public Hospital, (South East Queensland). The situation
will be reviewed on Monday morning and a decision made as to what
direction to take; the prognosis is not good.
Many will remember that when Ernie retired from the Army, he took a
job with Queensland Motorways as a toll-booth collector on the
Gateway Bridge which is the major Brisbane River crossing; he
retired from this job some years ago when the toll-booths closed the
tolls became automatic.

or
Email me and I will collate responses and present them to Chris.
Please ensure you include your full name, address and phone number
because I am sure that Chris will wish to thank you later when the
situation is finalised.
Chris, Ernie’s second wife of over 30 years, is an American Vietnam
veteran in her own right (a transport driver, if I remember
correctly).
Chris is receiving support from Ernie’s daughter from his first
marriage and her family.
Pat Twynam-Perkins (who herself was widowed only two months ago when
Allan {Two-Fathers or Diesel} passed away suddenly) and her
daughter, Angela, have flown in from Tasmania to comfort and support
Chris.
Julie and I visited Chris last Wednesday and (yesterday) Saturday.
We took the T-P’s to Mass and dinner on Saturday night whilst Chris
was with Ernie; Chris declined our offer of Mass and dinner because
she wished more time with Ernie.
Chris has also been in contact with other old Army friends.
Contrary to earlier information (and we ourselves believed this
until only three months ago), Ernie and Chris did NOT sell
their home and move to Perth and drop off the radar. We were pleased
that they re-established contact with us.
Julie and I will keep in contact with Chris, both by phone and in
person, and keep our network advised.

Had a call
from Marilyn Brazel just now and John passed away today.
He had been
home for a few weeks but in the end deteriorated quickly.
She has no funeral arrangements at this stage as they
have a son in U.S.
who is on his way home.
She suggested it'll be after Christmas.
Johno could
you let Ted know and condolences could be sent to Marilyn at

Marilyn is

All,
The funeral details for NX161092 / 27719 Cyril Gordon WOLLINGTON
are:
Venue: George Hartnet Funerals
19-21 Anzac Avenue
REDCLIFFE (Queensland)
Date: Thursday 23rd December 2010
Time: 10:00hrs
Duration: Short
Family POC: Trevor Wollington (one of Cyril’s six children).
I would like to take this opportunity to state that the Wollington
Family were aware of Cyril’s condition during his hospital stay,
however Cyril had requested that they have no contact with him. The
reasons for this were complex, and were due to a family rift. In
previous eMails the family were made to look as if they didn’t care
about Cyril’s condition based on their non-visitation. It is now
known that they did (and do) care about what happened but were
prevented from visiting him. There will be family representation at
the funeral so if attending please make yourselves known to the
family.
At this stage we do not know if his RSL Sub-Branch will be
conducting a “Poppy Service”.
We are awaiting receipt of a copy of Cyril’s Service Record.

Dave Bayliss

Subject: SAD NEWS: CYRIL WOLLINGTON (ex 1 SAS Coy 1957-1959)
Gentlemen and
Ladies,
For those of you that have not heard of Cyril Wallington this will
be a “Bottom to Top” read so that you can follow this incredibly sad
story through the brief eMail trail (there is a lot more information
that was gained during the visits to Cyril by various members of the
Queensland Branch of “The Association”).
From various conversations with Cyril over the past week:
It appears that Cyril started his service life in the Royal
Australian Navy before transferring into the 2nd AIF
during WW2.
He served in Darwin during WW2 where he operated Search Lights.
He jumped at Nadzab during WW2.
He transferred to a Landing Craft company towards or just after WW2.
He was a member of 1 SAS Coy.
What a sad loss.
The Committee will issue Funerary details as they come to hand.

Engineer

be sent

then

being almost bashed to death by his son. He is one of ours and
will be

Subject: CYRIL WOLLINGTON (possibly ex 1 SAS Coy) - Florence Syer
Unit, Greenslopes Hospital
The VP ASASA Qld Branch (Pete Schwarze) was informed by a friend of
his that there was an 87 year-old WW2 soldier in Greenslopes that
may be WW2 SAS. Pete asked if I knew anybody that could visit the
gentleman (I assumed he would have been British SAS).
I visited the gentleman Saturday afternoon and he informed me that
he is an ex-member of 1 SAS Coy (1957). He would have been a LCPL
(pos CPL) in charge of Transport c1957; had WW2 2AIF experience (he
claims to have jumped at Nadzab; and to have been with a
Landing-Craft-Company immediately post-war. He didn’t say what he
did between 1946-1957, but I think he was at Swanbourne immediately
prior to the Company being raised, that he was taken on-strength in
the Company due to his parachute background, and that he lived in
Seaweed Village). He was surprised that there was an SAS
Association, let alone anybody in it that would take the time to
visit him. Does anybody from the Company days either know him, or
recognise his name?
He was beaten to near death about a week ago and is
currently in Greenslopes Private Hospital (Brisbane) pending
assessment/relocation. He does not suffer dementia; however some of
the patients in the ward do, so it is a controlled-access area. The
assault on him was brutal and he is going to lose one eye, and
possibly the other as well. The assailant not only kicked and
bashed him, but also attempted to cut his throat. The assailant is
believed to be in custody, however the two old ladies that helped
Cyril were told by the Assailant “Your Dead”. As you can guess they
themselves are pretty stressed out over it all and now fear for
their own lives. Cyril will require surgery to save any remaining
eyesight, and also to reconstruct some of his facial-bones.
The medical staff are surprised that Cyril has survived thus far,
and the staff opinions are mixed as to whether he will ever be
discharged. I am told that is his fitness of body and mind that has
got him through. He apparently has maintained his fitness into
later-years by being a Dance teacher/instructor – not sure how long
ago this was, but he certainly looks fit enough, even with all his
bruises and frailty.
Cyril is currently in the Florence Syer Unit (Greenslopes) and is
stable, but severely battered. He is not eating (and possibly
hasn’t eaten for over a week. His wife passed-away about six-months
ago and he has had little contact with anybody since her death.
Is anybody in a position to visit him for a short chat? Please
contact me if you can help out.
I am unable to visit him daily due to having relocated to the Gold
Coast. I have committed to visit him at least once weekly, but
really need some help with other days. Most people have ‘written
him off’, but I think he just needs a reason to live. He also
requires a little help with walking so that some form muscular
rehabilitation can occur. Technically he is still in Shock, so I
have to rely totally on the information provided by the Nursing
Staff.
The more visits he gets the better (so far, in the past week he has
had two visits: one from myself, the other from his
daughter-in-law.) His family basically don’t have anything to do
with him. He has two sons in the Brisbane area: one that is
responsible for him being in hospital (i.e. beat him to near death),
and the other lives a few suburbs from Greenslopes and hasn’t
contacted him since he was admitted to hospital.
Please let me know if you can help out with a chat-visit. I can
provide further details to anybody that can visit Cyril.
