Subject: [Message from SFA National Headquarters] TAPS: ADDITIONAL INFO. REF; MAJ (R) PETER J.S. HARRIS, A-3295, C-86

MAJ (R)  Peter  J.S.  Harris  (A-3295)  Major Peter Harris, who had served in the Australian Army for 21 years, including two tours of duty in South Vietnam, died on the 31st of August 2006. In 1965, Peter spent a year training recruits at the 1st Recruit Training Battalion after which he joined the 6th Battalion of the RAR and he served with that battalion in South Vietnam from May 1966 to June 1967. The Australian force was then located in Phuoc Tuy Province to the south east of Saigon. On his return to Australia, Peter was sent to the Australian Jungle Training Centre to assist with the training of Australians moving to the South Vietnam combat zone. Peter was posted to the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (Australian advisers) in March 1969 where he served with the 5th Special Forces Group, Mike Force operating out of Pleiku where he commanded 223 Company, and later was XO of the battalion. Peter later served at the LRRP School located at Van Kiep, which was located to the north of the B-36 MSF at Long Hai. Several members of our Chapter have spoken with me about their service with Peter in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam, as one man said, I wouldn't be here today except for Peter Harris s command ability . Peter John Stuart Harris will be sadly missed; by not only his wife Jenny and family, but also all of us who served with him, or knew of him, as a soldier. Bruce Davies Chapter 86

Vale Peter Rigby

For the second time in a week it is the sad duty of the 9 RAR Association (SA) to inform you of the sudden passing of a Family member.

Yesterday Peter Rigby, who lived with wife, Chris, at Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills, died in the Royal Adelaide Hospital following unexpected complications from a long illness.

Peter's funeral arrangements are not known at this stage but will be circulated when known.

In the interim, 9 RAR (SA) President, Warren Featherby, has forwarded the below tribute:

Sadly Friday the 22 of September, 2006, saw the passing of Peter Gerard Rigby.

Born in Northcliffe, Western Australia, which is one of the tall timber towns in the  lower south west, near Pemberton, in 1936, he found his way into the Regular Army.

Pete served in a number of Battalions and was a foundation member of 4 RAR and 9 RAR.  There is an old saying that would suit the guy very well, " to know him was to  love him"

Pete was always the real deal, the loyal friend, the bloke that would always back you through thick and thin.  One of he most sincere blokes to have ever joined the Australian Army and anyone would feel proud if he might, at some time, call you his friend.

We will miss him

Feathers.

Danielle advised me that Barry has been given leave from Redcliffe Hospital Palliative Care Unit for approximately one week and he is residing in a granny-flat with his son Michael and is being nursed by his other daughter, Kerryn, at that address.

Barry is fading rapidly but would appreciate seeing friends if they phone ahead – WARNING – there are dogs on the property.

It is anticipated that he will be returning to Redcliffe Hospital late next week, unless his condition worsens markedly before that, in which case he will return early.

The family are grateful that the Sub-Branch members are taking an interest in Barry.

A soldier died today

G'day all,

Sad news on the passing today of 21406 WO1 Ernest 'Ossie'
Barrington OSTARA, DCM Ra Inf who served with AATTV 1964-66 and 1967-70 in South Vietnam.

Funeral details will be advised when known.

I have taken the liberty of printing details of the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) awarded for actions in 1965.

Army Number:                  21406
Rank:                         Warrant Officer Class One
Christian Name:               Ernest Barrington
Surname:                      OSTARA
Award:                        DCM

Warrant Officer Ostara served with the Australian Imperial Forces during World War Two and saw active service with the 2/6th Australian Commando Squadron from 1943 to 1946. He enlisted in the Australian Regular Army in September 1947. Before being allotted for duty with the Australian Army Training Team in South Vietnam he served with the First Battalion Royal Australian Regiment in Korea in 1953 as well as in a number of instruction posts including appointments with cadets, commandos and the Infantry Centre. Warrant Officer Ostara commenced his tour of duty with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam on 10 November 1963, his first assignment being that of Adviser to the Vietnamese National Training Centre at Dong Da.
At 1500 hours on
7 January 1965, the Reconnaissance Company, with Warrant Officer Ostara as Senior Adviser, was in refresher training at Dong Da Training Centre. An operation was in progress in the Northern end of the training area where a "Tiger Company" (a heliborne reaction force) was clearing a Viet Cong company from a nearby village. The Viet Cong broke clear and moved South across undulating scrubby country in plain view of a group consisting of Australians and Vietnamese troops. Under the guidance and with the assistance of the Australian members of the Training Team, the Vietnamese troops blocked the Viet Cong move with machine gun fire inflicting seven casualties on the Viet Cong and forcing them to take cover and move into a narrow step sided water course. At this stage the group of 10 Vietnamese troops who were being instructed by Warrant Officer Ostara, under his direction quickly took up an intercepting position further up the water course. The advancing Viet Cong on meeting this group threw grenades which caused panic among the Vietnamese troops under training. Quickly assessing the seriousness of the situation and to protect the troops under his care Warrant Officer Ostara single handed attacked the Viet Cong force. With his personal carbine he shot down the leading elements of two who proved to be a senior Viet Cong Commander and his orderly. Rounding a bend to follow up, he found no remaining enemy. His actions made a tremendous impact on the force to which he was attached, which on succeeding days undertook further successful operations. Warrant Officer Ostara's action was a splendid individual effort and is in the highest tradition of the Australian Regular Army and reflects great credit upon himself.

Ossie was also the recipient of a number of foreign decorations for his service in
South Vietnam and these included the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry (with Silver Star) and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry (Bronze Star with Cluster).

Ossie will be sadly missed by all Team members as well as many members of the veteran community.

May he Rest In Peace.

Persevere,

Rick
