On 1 Mar 1966 he was promoted to Substantive Corporal on 1 Mar 1966 and Temporary Sergeant one day later.  On 21 Jun 1966 he was promoted to Substantive sergeant after completing a three weekend course.  On 21 Feb 1968 Cliff Savage volunteered for full time duty as CSM at 25 RQR Toowoomba and on 19 Jul 1968 he enlisted into the Australian Regular Army, remaining with 25 RQR.

In November 1968 Cliff was posted to Jungle Training Centre, Canungra where he teamed up with George Mansford.  He departed for Saigon, Vietnam on 25 Nov 1969 and served with 1 ARU until 13 Apr 1970 where he joined A Company, 8 RAR, still in South Vietnam.  His platoon commander was a young Fred Harvison, now the Mayor of Singleton. On 1 Nov 1970 Cliff embarked on the HMAS Sydney at Vung Tau for the voyage home to Australia.

Cliff Savage continued to serve with 8 RAR and then 8/9 RAR after they merged on 31 Oct 1975 where he escorted the colours on the amalgamation parade.  He was promoted to Warrant Officer Class Two whilst still serving at Enoggera on 1 Feb 1975.  In August that same year he transferred to 41 RNSWR as Training WO at Grafton.  On 28 Nov 1977 he was posted to LWC Canungra as an instructor on Warrant Officer Wing and later on 16 Jan 1980 posted as CSM B Coy 2/4 RAR in Townsville.

On 25 Nov 1981 he was promoted to Warrant Officer Class One and posted as RSM 2 Trg Gp at Ingleburn.  His subsequent postings as an RSM were as RSM 8 BDE and RSM 2 DIV.  Cliff was commissioned and promoted to Captain with a posting to NSW LWC Det Singleton as Senior Instructor.  Cliff was awarded the Order of Australia Medal on 26 Jan 1987 in recognition of his work with the GRES and as RSM 2 Div.   On 15 Nov1991 he was promoted to temporary Major and posted as SO2 Coord to General Peter Cosgrove, HQ Infantry Centre Singleton.

MAJOR Cliff Savage, OAM resigned from the Regular Army on 25 Feb 1993 and transferred to the Active Ares the following day.  In April of 1997 he transferred to the Inactive List.

From 1965 to 2003 Cliff served a total of 38 years for his nation.

Foges.

Alan Price from the 4RAR Association informs that Gary kendricks passed away

on April 14 2006 in the ACT. His funeral was on April 22 and was attended by

a number of 4 RAR veterans. Apparently Rollo Brett formerly 2 IC of B

Company gave the eulogy.  Gary rose to the rank of Major having transferred

form Infantry to Medical Corps. I do have his widow's name and address and

can pass that on to anyone who is interested.

Dear Jim

I just wanted to write you a little note to thank you so much for your kind
letter, which I read to Mum. Your note was certainly the highlight of my
weekend and I know Dad would so have loved to have caught up with you. It
was only in organising his funeral I came across the 4RAR Association and it
is a shame I had not found it sooner. He told me lots of stories and I could
not help but smile when I read your note about the coffee.

Not a lot changed you see. Often after dinner in the evenings we would
insist that Dad make the coffee! :) The night before his heart attack I had
had dinner with he and Mum and he groaned "Why do I have to make the
coffee?!" We explained Mum had cooked, I had made dessert, so that task fell
on him! He was a man of such good humour and kindness.

He lived a terrific life, and although I know he always said "Nobody lives
forever" I was feeling very sad he won't be at my wedding in Hawaii in 6
weeks. Your letter really cheered me up and like Mum, I value your time in
writing. I will hang on to your letter and one of these days when his
Grandkids want to know more about him, I am sure I can keep these things so
they have some sense of the wonderful man he was and his life experiences.

Kindest regards
Vanessa Kendrick.

PS- I have attached some pictures of Dad from the last 6 months- two from an
engagement party he and Mum threw for me and one at the War Memorial last
November with my fiance and I.

All Sappers,

We have received the sad news that Brian (MOOKA) Moorecroft passed away around 11pm last night(tuesday). He lapsed into a coma and did not come out, after a battle with cancer and kidney problems.

He served with 17 Const Sqn (South Vietnam) and 24 Const Sqn (Borneo). Many will remember him entertaining mates with a few tunes on his harmonica. I hear he was planning to celebrate his 69th birthday with a few mates over this coming weekend. He, and a few others doing it tough, were in our thoughts at our recent reunion at Bribie Island.

His home and property in Atherton were damaged when cyclone LARRY went through. A large tree fell and wiped out the front quarter of the gable roof, etc.. Tarpaulins are at present tied over the damage.

A small group of mates up there have been helping him and Barbara with getting paperwork and assessment done before repairs begin. They are being held up at present waiting for approval. They have been able to clear up some of the downed trees and debris though.

We will forward funeral details when they come to hand, via JETHRO who is in touch with Barbara up there.

Regards

UBIQUE
