Ken Rentoul’s name and Vietnam Service details are not listed on the Nominal Roll of Vietnam Veterans, but the material below refers:

Hi again,

DOB 26 Sep 32,  DOD 18 Apr 99

SVN 5 Nov 69 - 5 Nov 70 as near as I can recall.  Margaret is going to see if she can find his AB83 for me but I'm 99% confident about those dates.

She just told me an interesting story about a new list being printed years ago and he wasn't on it.  He was going up to the bar at Rosanna Golf Club when someone yelled out that he was full of shit telling everyone he'd been to SVN as he wasn't even on the list.  Naturally he was devastated.

The printers eventually acknowledged that many had been left off and sent him a copy of those who had been omitted.

Thanks again

Rog

Roger,

Thanks.

I’ll include Ken’s detail in the “Mortality Files”.

The Excel files that I usually upload towards the end of every month are the end result of a semi automatic matching process with the nominal roll.

Obviously this won’t work in Ken’s case, but I can include the details. If you do come across his actual dates of service I can include them.

I’ll put your eulogy where I usually put the Funeral Notice.

Cheers,

Been out to dinner.  I am a Legatee and Ken's widow (Margaret) is one of my war widows.

Here is a copy of his eulogy (which I gave) .. as you will see he served with me and under me.  He was in SVN Nov 69 - Nov or early Dec 70.

Ken was my Foreman of Sigs when I first arrived in 110.  He was then seconded to Foreign Affairs if you get my drift .. could he have been 'left off' for that reason ?

Cheers

Rog

KEN RENTOUL

1932 – 1999

I AM BOTH SADDENED AND HONOURED TO STAND HERE TODAY TO RECALL FOR US ALL A SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE LIFE OF PARTNERSHIP, LEADERSHIP, FRIENDSHIP, GUIDANCE AND SERVICE OF OUR HUSBAND, FATHER, FATHER-IN-LAW, GRANDFATHER, MENTOR AND FRIEND – KEN RENTOUL.

AS YOU KNOW KEN JOINED THE ARMY AS AN EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD IN BRISBANE IN 1950 AND UNDERTOOK HIS INITIAL TRAINING AT INGLEBURN AND THEN AT BALCOMBE AFTER BEING ALLOCATED TO THE CORPS OF SIGNALS.

HIS INITIAL POSTING WAS TO ARMY HEADQUARTERS (AHQ) SIGNAL REGIMENT, LATER TO BE RENAMED 403 SIGNAL REGIMENT AND SUBSEQUENTLY SIX SIGNAL REGIMENT.  HE SERVED BOTH AT THE TRANSMITTING STATION AT DIGGERS REST AND AT GROSVENOR DURING THIS PERIOD BEFORE BEING POSTED AS AN ASSISTANT INSTRUCTOR TO THE SCHOOL OF SIGNALS AT BALCOMBE.

KEN’S TECHNICAL ABILITY, PARTICULARLY IN THE RADIO AREA, AND HIS CONGENIAL APPROACH TO BOTH SUPERIORS AND SUBORDINATES WAS WELL SUITED TO THE CHALLENGES OF 24 HOUR OPERATIONAL UNITS AND  HE HAD A SUCCESSION OF DEMANDING BUT ENJOYABLE HARDSHIP POSTINGS TO CABARLAH, WALLGROVE, DUNDAS AND WATSONIA AS A WARRANT OFFICER CLASS 0NE FOREMAN OF SIGNALS BETWEEN 1959 AND 1969.  IT WAS DURING THIS PERIOD THAT MANY LASTING FRIENDSHIPS WITH IDENTITIES LIKE MICK ROONEY, HARRY COOK, DAVE FRY, BLUEY ANDERSON, WAYNE LAWRENCE, CLIFF KING AND GEORGE POWELL, TO MENTION A FEW, DEVELOPED.

IT WAS IN 1968 THAT I FIRST HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING AND SERVING WITH KEN AT A TIME WHEN OUR RADIO CIRCUITS TO SOUTH VIETNAM WERE THE ONLY MEANS OF RAPID CONTACT WITH THE TROOPS DEPLOYED THERE AND THEREFORE OF VITAL IMPORTANCE 24 HOURS A DAY.  LATE NIGHTS AND EARLY MORNINGS WERE THE ORDER OF THE DAY GIVEN THE VAGUARIES OF RADIO PROPOGATION.

THOSE OF YOU HERE TO HONOUR KEN TODAY WHO SERVED IN  THE CORPS OF SIGNALS WILL NO DOUBT RECALL THE ‘OTHER END’ SYNDROME WHICH WAS THE CAUSE OF EVERY MAJOR COMMUNICATIONS OUTAGE IN THOSE TIMES (AND INCIDENTALLY STILL IS).  IT WAS NO SURPRISE THEN THAT KEN WAS POSTED TO SOUTH VIETNAM IN 1969 AS FOREMAN OF SIGNALS OF 110 SIGNAL SQUADRON TO FIX THE PROBLEMS AT THE ‘OTHER END’.

AS WITH EVERY TASK HE UNDERTOOK KEN APPLIED HIMSELF DILIGENTLY TO REBUILDING AND UPGRADING THE TRANSMITTER, RECIEVER AND COMMUNICATIONS CENTRE FACILITIES AT VUNG TAU. WHEN I ARRIVED IN VUNG TAU IN OCTOBER 1970 TWO WEEKS BEFORE KEN WAS DUE TO DEPART, I TOOK OVER, AS OPERATIONS OFFICER, A UNIT ON WHICH KEN HAD AGAIN PLACED HIS TECHNICAL STAMP OF EXCELLENCE.

ON RETURING TO AUSTRALIA KEN WAS COMMISSIONED LIEUTENANT AND SERVED AGAIN AS AN INSTRUCTOR AT THE SCHOOL OF SIGNALS FOLLOWED BY APPOINTMENT AS SECOND IN COMMAND OF 110 SIGNAL SQUADRON WHICH HAD NOW RETURNED FROM SOUTH VIETNAM.

IN 1975, AFTER 25 YEARS SERVICE, KEN RETIRED FROM HIS FINAL POSTING IN SIX SIGNAL REGIMENT AS OC 117 SIGNAL SQUADRON.

AFTER HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE ARMY KEN’S EXPERTISE IN ALL FACETS OF LONG HAUL COMMUNICATIONS WAS STILL IN GREAT DEMAND AND HE CONTINUED  TO APPLY HIS TECHNICAL SKILLS TO PROBLEMS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE AND DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, BOTH IN  AUSTRALIA AND OVERSEAS, UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT, FINALLY, IN 1986.

IN HIS RETIREMENT KEN WAS ABLE TO DEVOTE HIS ENERGY AND TALENTS TO MANY PASSTIMES AND PROJECTS BESIDES HIS FAMILY.  APART FROM BEING ABLE TO SPEND MUCH MORE TIME PLAYING GOLF AND APPLYING HIS EXTRAORDINARY SKILLS AT THE LATHE TO TURNING MANY OBJECTS OF BEAUTY. HE ALSO JOINED MELBOURNE LEGACY WHERE HE WAS ABLE TO GIVE COMFORT AND ASSISTANCE TO THE WIDOWS AND CHILDREN OF EX-SERVICEMEN.  KEN SERVED AS CHAIRMAN AND SECRETARY OF HIS BRANCH AND WAS ON THE ACTIVE LIST OF LEGATEES AT THE TIME OF HIS PASSING.  HIS CONTRIBUTION OVER MANY YEARS AS THE LEGACY ORGANISER OF THE ROSANNA GOLF DAY WAS MADE EVEN MORE SPECIAL BY HIS PRESENCE ON THE COMMITTEE OF THE ROSANNA GOLF CLUB AND WE ARE LOOKING TO PERPETUATE KEN’S CONTRIBUTION TO THAT WONDERFUL EVENT IN SOME WAY.  KEN ALSO ENJOYED THE FELLOWSHIP OF FREEMASONRY AND SERVED AS WORSHIPFUL MASTER AND ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF THE ARMY LODGE AS WELL AS BEING AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE WATSONIA AND GREENSBOROUGH RSL CLUBS.

IT WAS ALSO IN THIS POST RETIREMENT PERIOD THAT KEN, TOGETHER WITH HIS CLOSE FRIEND DAVID FRY, FOUNDED THE SIGNALS VIETNAM VETERANS ASSOCIATION OF WHICH KEN WAS FOUNDATION SECRETARY AND CONTRIBUTOR TO THE CONCEPT OF THE  ASSOCIATION’S NEWSLETTER ‘TIEN NOI UC’.  IN FACT KEN IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE ASSOCIATION AND HIS HONORARY LIFE MEMBERSHIP WILL BE CONFIRMED AT SUNDAY’S ANZAC DAY ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE ASSOCIATION.

THOSE OF US WHO SERVED WITH KEN IN THE CORPS OF SIGNALS AND IN LEGACY OR WHO HAD THE PLEASURE OF PLAYING A ROUND OF GOLF WITH HIM OR DISCUSSING WOOD TURNING OR MET KEN IN ANY OF THE MANY PURSUITS TO WHICH HE ADDED HIS ENERGY AND TALENT, EXTEND OUR HEARTFELT SYMPATHY, MARGARET, TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY,

MORE IMPORTANTLY, WE THANK YOU FOR LETTING US SHARE PART OF HIS LIFE AND WE GIVE THANKS TO THE GREAT ARCHITECT OF THE UNIVERSE FOR A MAN WHO LIVED RESPECTED AND WHOSE DEATH WE DEEPLY REGRET.

Ladies & Gentlemen

Gooday to all and sadly Have been asked to advise as many Corps members as I can of the passing of Barry Hubble ,yesterday 19 Feb 06. For those who were unaware, Barry had suffered from lung cancer for some time.  For those of you that have extensive data bases could you please advise your contacts of this event. ( At times like this I truly miss Blue's service). Barry was one of the real characters of the Corps and was one of the unholy trinity of Hubble, Henigan and Flanagan and was the last survivor. There will be a private cremation in accord with Barry's wishes once the Family have assembled in Darwin.

Barry's widow Fay can be contacted at;

Hi All,

Relayed from John Gearn at Mt Carbine for all Tom's Pandanus mates and former Corps members.  It is with great sadness that I report that Tom did not survive the night. His heart gave out just before midnight, but John Gearn reports that he went peacefully with no suffering due to appropriate medication.  I would like to share with you all some earlier extracts from mail from John and more recently one just in from Wendy Moline. John is really broken up about Tom's passing as they were the best of mates, with Tom living next door to John's Mt Carbine Hotel. John's computer is down again, so any emails just at present to him will unfortunately bounce.

Hi All,

Relayed from John Gearn at Mt Carbine for all Tom's Pandanus mates and former Corps members. Tom was taken to Mareeba Hospital with more breathing difficulties yesterday Wednesday 29 Mar 06. For those of you who may have been unaware, Tom had been diagnosed about six weeks ago with lung cancer, which has impacted significantly on his breathing difficulties with emphysema.

After tests in Cairns, Tom returned to Carbine positive and determined to beat the cancer. Unfortunately as a result of yesterday's trip to Mareeba, his wife Carol has been advised by the hospital that he probably only has another two or three days to live.

John will keep us posted but as his computer is down, will relay any further news to Jen and I for dissemination.

Regards

Geoff Sanders

Sadly, I attended the funeral of Tom Towers at Mt Carbine. There was well

over 100 vehicles in the cortege to the cemetary. The service was very well

done and was attended by a large number of Pandanus Vets who came to pay

their last respects to a good mate.  As usual John Gearn was flat out

organising and assisting Tom's wife Carol through her ordeal.  Peter Jones

from the Townsville TPI magazine, The Bugle, took a number of photos and

will publish some in the next issue of the Bugle.  Tom will be sadly missed

by all.
