The President, Committee and Members of the Vietnam Veteran's Association, Nobel (sic) Park Sub Branch regret the passing of our esteemed member, Peter.

Lest We Forget.

He is Peter Anthony Adamowicz, 3176637, served in SVN from 17 November 1969 to 22 June 1972, with 8 RAR, HQ AFV and AAAGV.  According to NRVV.  Bit of doubt on the correctness of this entry in the Nominal Roll.  Time frame represents 31 continuous months in country.  Not possible as he normally would have been made to take a leave period back in Aussie.

For your database.

Strange set of coincidences – Ken Rentoul was my SSM in Saigon in 1969.

However, I fear that as the deceased today, was part of the Fleet Air Arm and saw service on the Sydney as well as the Melbourne doing two trips to SVN, he received the logistic support medal – SVN bar, thus he rightly claims an entitlement – additionally DVA issued him a gold card for his cancer – attributed to dioxins – his kidney developed cancer 9 years ago and it was removed – however cancer spread and he died 4/6/2006  = Date of birth was 27/4/1941 – South Australia.  I fear there are many other – in this classification – Clive Smith, Roger Tozer are two more Navy men who served on duty at sea off the coast of Vietnam and received medals to recognise them

Perhaps the “NOMINAL ROLL” about to be recommenced will offer more enlightenment.

From memory, the only Vietnam Veteran I’ve included in the “Mortality Files” who was not on the Nominal Roll is Ken Rentoul.

Following the hyperlink will give you the details.

If you are confident that David Marks had Vietnam Service I’m happy to include him in the files.

As I did with Ken Rentoul, I’ll have to add the entries manually, so whatever details you could provide would be appreciated.

Details such as DOB and start and finish of Vietnam Service, if available, would be helpful.

Barry,

Thanks for the advice.

I can’t locate this veteran on the Nominal Roll of Vietnam Veterans.

I’ve had a few (probably less than 10) where I haven’t been able to verify their Vietnam Service.

Dear 6 RAR Family,

It is with profound regret that I pass on the extremely sad news that

our much loved first CO passed away this morning (Saturday).  As I write

these words to be sent through Arthur Willemse also, I am in Melbourne

and have just been informed of Colin's death by MAJGEN David Butler.

I have not yet been able to speak with Colin's son Mark, however

understand from David Butler that the funeral will be in Gympie.  Colin

would wish to lie beside his beloved wife Lee, who passed away some

years ago.

as soon as further details are known, they will be passed on by this

means and the family network.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to all who knew Colin and thought as

affectionately of him as I did.  May he rest in peace.

Australia farewells a true hero

20.06.2006

Story: Michelle Day

GUNSHOTS echoed above the Gympie cemetery yesterday morning in a salute to Colonel Colin Townsend, a father, grandfather, friend, leader and brother-in-arms.

To most locals he was an ex-serviceman tirelessly dedicated to the community and involved in the RSL Sub Branch, Legacy, Anglican Church, Vietnam Veteran’s Association, Gympie Muster and Woodworks Museum.

Many didn’t know he was a distinguished military leader and an Australian hero.

Colonel Colin Townsend, service number 17000, was in command of the relief force which went out to rescue outnumbered Delta Company 6th RAR in the renowned Battle of Long Tan in Vietnam in 1966.

For his leadership of 6th RAR in Vietnam, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.

Yesterday, his casket lay illuminated by a solitary candle that stood two metres in its wooden holder at the centre of the altar in St Peter’s Anglican Church.

More than 400 people, many wearing medals and uniforms, filled 32 pews and stood in the corridors, the back of the church and spilled outside onto the footpath.

The church bell pealed and the breeze suddenly gusted as soldiers of today’s 6th RAR, founded by Col. Townsend in 1965, carried his casket to the hearse while the bagpipes mournfully sounded Amazing Grace and a few tiny drops of rain fell.

Police blocked inner-city intersections at Mellor Street, the Five-Ways, Young Street, River Road, banked up traffic from the Monkland Street roundabout back to the Bruce Highway and brought the Channon Street end of Mary Street to a standstill as a cortege of about 100 vehicles proceeded to the Gympie cemetery where Colin Townsend was laid to rest in the same grave as his late wife, Lee.

Red poppies were handed out at the grave site before nine riflemen sounded a three-shot salute.

Colin Townsend was born at Ingham in 1927 and began his military career at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, in 1946. He graduated in 1948 and became part of the occupying forces in post-World War II Japan before being among the first soldiers sent to Korea in 1950.

He met his future wife Betty (Lee) Whitlock while posted to 18 National Service Battalion in Tasmania, where she served in the Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps.

He wrote the Standing Operating Procedures used by infantry battalions in Vietnam and was sent to the Canungra training centre in 1965 to raise the 6th RAR Battalion before their first tour of Vietnam from 1966 to 1967.

He became the Commanding Officer, Corps of Staff Cadets, Duntroon before being promoted to Colonel and posted to Townsville and finally Brisbane, where he was the Commander of the First Military District.

In 1980, he retired to a beef cattle property at Amamoor and dedicated himself to the community.

His volunteer efforts stepped up when he and wife Lee moved to Gympie in 1993, and he was variously involved with the RSL Sub Branch, Legacy, Anglican Church, Vietnam Veteran’s Association, Gympie Muster and Woodworks Museum.

He sustained this level of commitment to the community after the death of his wife, Lee, in 2002 until he was diagnosed with cancer in January. He passed away on June 10.

Ex-army mates share memories of Col. Townsend

20.06.2006

WHAT are your memories of Colin?

Graham Smith, president, 6RAR Association (served at Long Tan):

“He was the first Commanding officer of 6RAR. I was there the day that battalion was formed. He was 37 (years old) when he took Command of the battalion. To a lot of young fellows like myself he was a bit of a father figure. He was a very, very compassionate, understanding and fair man – just the person required to lead a young battalion. And he did that with distinction.”

Captain Brian Halls:

“6RAR was my first unit as a national serviceman and he was my first commanding officer.

He knew his men personally. He was very much a soldier’s man. He took a keen interest in training and got to know his men’s weaknesses and strengths as all good commanders do. He was very down to earth person. It was good to know that he was there behind you when you needed him. You knew you were in good hands in his command.”

Lieutenant Colonel Charles Mollison:

“I was Alpha Company commancer under Colin and I was also his adjutant (right-hand man on headquarters) from 1965 to 1967 in Vietnam. Colin was one of those rare people who treated everybody he met with profound respect and consideration, no matter what rank they were or what station in life. He was a brilliant commander and the spirit that he imbued into 6RAR in that period (1965-1967) remains to this day. They (original soldiers of 6RAR) have come from far and wide to be here today.”

Hi All,

We have been informed about the tragic death of Wayne Dixon, please see the correspondence received, the date of the tragedy is presumed as 5 June 2006.

The delay in passing this sad news is, because of the lateness of receiving the news and I was away at the time the emails arrived.

Regards

Arthur

Hi Guys,

Today I spoke to the Esperence Express, the local newspaper. The receptionist was kind enough to read out the article which appeared in the paper surrounding Wayne's drowning. As best as I can remember:

On Monday, whilst fishing off the rocks with his 26 year old son, 57 year old Mr Dixon lost his footing, slipping off the rocks and into the sea. His son threw him a lifebouy, but Mr Dixon was unable to grasp it. His body was carried out to sea by the current. After the alarm was raised, the Police and SES recovered his body, attempted resuscitation but to no avail.

His funeral will be at the Esperence Lawn Cemetery on Saturday 10 June, with Bruce (Willy) Cliton (Williams) and Lefty Fischer representing us.

I have arranged for a wreath to be placed on our behalf, with a photo of him and Marcus in SVN (see below).

If anyone requires them, these are the phone numbers I managed to track down:

Esperence Express (08) 9071 2322

Hi,

Further to our conversation regarding a wreath for Wayne Dixon's funeral, I have attached a photo of him in Vietnam during 1970, under which I would like this message:

Wayne, you will always be remembered

Hi Folks,

I had a brief call from Lefty Fischer last night. Wayne Dixon died in a drowning accident in Esperance WA.

I don't have much info. I rang Len Faver & he says there was a report in the paper that someone was washed off the rocks, so I guess that was Wayne.

Lefty is flying over for the funeral which is Saturday. (I think)

Len is going to try to find out more info.

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of another of the Corps Olds and Bolds - Col Reynolds. His partner Chris has just rung me with the sad news, advising that Col passed away this morning. For some time now Col had been suffering from Liver failure and has been in and out of hospital since early March. Recently his kidneys also failed and resultant complications have subsequently taken their toll.

Col served with me in 104 Sigs 69-70 and with many other units during his 1967 through 1987 twenty years of service, hence my reason for copying this message to all members of the Corps for whom I have Email addresses, as I am sure this laconic character has touched many of our lives.

Chris expects that funeral details will be known later this afternoon and she will pass them on to me for onforwarding. Col's computer system has been down for several weeks now and Chris does not know how to recover it, so those wishing to send condolences should address them to:

 Hi All,

Chris has now confirmed Col's funeral service

details and has asked me to pass them on.

Col's service will be conducted at the Chapel of

Gregson and Weight at 11am on Tuesday the 20th of

 June 2006.

The Chapel is located at 34 National Park Road,

 Nambour.

Those wishing to attend should travel via the Bruce

Highway to Nambour, taking the Bli Bli Road exit and

travel in a westerly direction along Bli Bli Road,

continue straight ahead through the traffic lights

and proceed westerly up the hill to the Chapel which

is clearly identified on the right hand side of the

road. Bli Bli Road becomes National Park Road

between the lights and the continuation to Netherton

St. If you get to Nambour Hospital, you've come too

 far.

Chris has asked that there be no flowers by request.

Donations to your local Vietnam Veterans Association

towards their welfare work would be appreciated.

Following the service there will be a cuppa on site

 at the Chapel.

As an aside, I am Debbie's Advocate also, and we had

really only just started the process after nagging

him to do something about his conditions for several

years. Those claims are still going through the DVA

process and it is my intention to see that Chris

ends up being looked after.  Those of you who knew

him in his later years may prove invaluable to me

being able to finalise his claims in his absence.

Accordingly, please do not hesitate to drop me a

note with brief details of the period you got to

 know our mate.

 Many thanks,

 Geoff Sanders
