KILLED . . . Alan and Marie Parfitt of Burpengary who died when their motorcycle crashed into a car.

Seven dead on roads on holiday weekend
Louise Crossen
02may05

THE most-deadly Labour Day weekend for years on Queensland's roads has lent a sombre tone to police appeals for drivers to exercise extra care today on their return home from holidays.

As relatives of the seven dead – from two major accidents – were being notified, police were promising a show of force today to keep the horror road toll from rising any higher in the face of the expected traffic throughout the state.

Police yesterday released the names of two of the dead, Alan and Marie Parfitt, as authorities worked to identify the bodies of five people killed in another accident in Mackay.

Mr Parfitt, 60, and his wife, 59, from Burpengary, north of Brisbane, were killed when their motorbike slammed into a car at D'Aguilar, north of Brisbane, about 2pm on Saturday.

Just hours later, five people died in a smash near Mackay, bringing the weekend's road toll to seven.

Police said it was the worst Labour Day weekend in at least five years and warned drivers to take it easy on the roads today.

State traffic acting superintendent Rob McCall said police were still investigating the crashes.

"What we can say is that a number of families are grieving the loss of loved ones," he said.

"We are appealing to motorists to slow down, take breaks and drive according to road conditions as they return from their holiday."

For the Parfitt's daughter Debbie Thomas, the tragic news still has not sunk in.

"I just sat there, thinking this isn't happening to me, it's not my Mum and Dad," she said. "I just can't believe they are gone – mum and dad were my best friends."

Mrs Thomas said the family were comforted by the fact her parents were together at the end.

"Apparently Dad was already gone when the paramedics arrived, Mum was still hanging on," she said. "I think Dad's spirit was gone and then he remembered he'd left something behind and came back to get Mum.

"I can't imagine one without the other."

The Parfitts settled into a retirement complex for Vietnam Veterans last year and their friends and neighbours remembered them as good mates who were always ready to lend a hand.

"They were a lovely couple and they would have gone out of their way to help anybody," complex manager Christine Fuller said.

Police are still trying to formally identify the five people killed in a horror smash near Mackay on Saturday.

The crash happened when a van and car collided on the Bruce Highway, north of Mackay, about 4pm.

The van burst in to flames on impact, and the occupants – a man in his 50s, a woman aged 44 and two teenage girls, all from Mackay – were incinerated.

The car driver, a man aged 68 from Bloomsbury, north of Mackay, also was killed.

All 9 RAR Personel

It saddens me to let you all know the original CSM of B Company 9 RAR

Woodside, Mr John Cockran has passed away in Bunbury WA.  John did not tour

with 9 RAR but had his second tour of Vietnam in 69-70,  John or (Bubbles)

as he was affectionly known joined the Army in 1948 served in Korea and

Vietnam his first tour in Vietnam was with AATTVN. John was well respected

by the diggers and I know from several lenghty talks with him he always

maintained his affection and close association with the troops, this did not

fit well with some senior ranks. John retired from the Army in 1973 with the

Rank of WO1 and spent his retirement in the South West of West Australia.

He was buried in his home town of Denmark, which was attended by a large

contigent of local and visiting Vets and friends. John died from cancer of

the stomach and of which know one new until days before his death.  John was

a non smoker.

John could always remember with humour even after 30 + years  several of the

original B company diggers and he had some lovely memories of times spent in

the build up of B company prior to Vietnam.  Some of the stories always had

the same players in the likes of John Leahy, Geoff Strawbridge, Freddy

Harris, and of course the Rat Pack.
