RECCE FLT |
Dear Fellow Gunners and Friends
Sadly another friend of the Gunners has
suddenly passed away - at only 64 years young. Lt Col Tom Guivarra
AAAvn (Retd) suffered a small stroke last Monday followed by a larger
one on Wednesday. He was admitted to the intensive care unit of St
Andrew's Hospital, Brisbane and an MRI scan on Friday showed that Tom
had massive brain stem damage as a result of the second stroke. The
medical decision was to slow down the artificial respiration machine,
and then remove it entirely. Tom passed away last evening.
Tom Guivarra was well known to many Gunners
because of his early career as at North Head in 1964. Selected for
flying training, he became a fixed wing pilot but never forgot his
Gunner roots and would often refer to them in his very engaging witty
comments when in the company of RAA members. That common bond of
camaraderie between artillery officers and Army pilots which sprang from
the earliest Air OP appointments led to Tom Guivarra frequently visiting
Gunner messes. He was always an active participant in mess activities,
and after separating from the service, continued this trend by being
instrumental in maintaining the honorary officers' Black Tie Dinners at
Victoria Barracks, Brisbane. I am proud to class myself as an old
friend of Tom Guivarra and as he comes in for short finals on that Great
Landing Strip up above, I know that he will not be worried about stray
artillery rounds from his other RAA mates.
The above medical information was received
from Glen Duus (Lt Col [Retd] RAEME AAAvn) and the vale below was
released by Frank Benfield, the National President of the 161 Recce
Flight Association. Glen (duus@powerup.com.au
) is willing to accept condolences on behalf of Tom's widow, Judith.
Vale Thomas William Guivarra - Gunner, pilot,
officer and gentleman.
Ubique
Arthur

I write with a heavy heart to inform you and by
extension your Artillery network of the sad passing of Lt Col (Retd) Tom
Guivarra. The following information, extracted from the relevant notice
on the 161 Recce Flt PossumMail, you may wish to share with that RAA
network because of Tom's background.
Thomas William Guivarra passed away at 1920hrs, Saturday 08 May.
19994 Thomas William Guivarra RAA, was born on 27 March 1940. Tom
served with 161 (Indep) Recce Flt in Vietnam from 22 Sep 66 until 27
Sep 67. Tom was a fixed wing pilot who flew Cessna 180's plus a Cessna
O-1 Bird Dog on loan from the US Army.
Tom, Bill Davies, John White, Alan Cunningham, Chic Barron, Bob Askew,
Vic Salmon, Terry Ellis and a number of other recruits began their Army
careers at the School of Artillery at North Head in Sydney in early
1964. In the same year he commenced his flying training which he
completed in July 1965.
From 01 Jul 68 until 07 Jan 70 he was the fixed wing section commander
in 183 (Indep) Recce Flt in PNG flying Pilatus Porter aircraft.
Tom and Don Cockerell completed their flying instructor training at the
Central Flying School in England in 1970. Subsequently, Tom was posted
to RAAF Central Flying School as the Army liaison Officer followed by a
posting to Army Aviation Centre, Oakey as the Fixed Wing Standards
Officer.
In 1976 Tom was posted to AAS (Washington) as the SO2 Mobility and in
1978 attended Staff College at Queenscliff.
In 1982 Tom served with the MFO, Sinai Force, as SO2 (Air Ops),
returning to Australia in 1983 to HQ 1 MD.
Tom was posted as CO/CI, School of Army Aviation, Oakey, from 1985 until
end 1986. During this period, he was also the PMC of the Officers Mess
at Oakey.
In Dec 86 he was appointed SO1 ACCN HQ 1 MD and from that appointment
he resigned in 1988.
Tom is survived by his wife Judith and 2 sons,
Kristian and Damien .
May He Rest In Peace - Lest We Forget.
