A soldier died today

G'day all,

I just received the following message from a contact tonight.

WO2 Leonard A. Williams was on of the 'Originals' who went to serve with AATTV in 1962.

Take care and Persevere,

Rick

It is with sadness that I advise of the death of another warrior .... Leonard A. Williams, WO1, Retd.  Len served with the AATTV July 62 - June 63, he later served as RSM 2 RAR from October 1968 until June 1971 covering the period of the reorganisation of 2 RAR after its first tour in Vietnam until its return from the second tour. Len has been in poor health for the last few years.  His farewell service will be held at the Norwood Park Crematorium  Sandford Street Mitchell, ACT at 10:00 am on Wednesday 15 December.

Lest we forget

G'day Terry

Same message from 2 sources to me

for your lists, mate

Good evening Possums,

It is with deep regret that I advise that 630267 Chaplain Wilfred John Egan

has passed away.

News of Chaplain Egan's death has come through from Tasmania via Nick Brown.

Tragically Chaplain Egan was found deceased early this morning 15 December

in his car on the side of the road not far from his home in Scamander in

Tasmania. It is suspected that the cause of death was a heart attack

Chaplain Egan was posted to HQ 1ATF from 11 May 1971 until 18 November 1971.

From 01 June 1971 Chaplain Egan was attached to 161 (Indep) Recce Flt.

Unfortunately our records do not record how long he was attached to the

Flight however it is possible that he was with the Flight until it moved to

Vung Tau early Oct 71.

Chaplain Egan was born on 24 December 1935.

Some years back Chaplain Egan met up with a number of out Tasmanian Possums

at a Vietnam Veteran's Reunion and recalled his days with the Flight at Nui

Dat.

Details of the funeral are not known however, I will endeavour to contact

some of our resident Possum's in Tasmania to see if any of them are in a

position to attend the funeral.

May He Rest In Peace.

Regards

Len

A message below from Brian Harper, State Sec., VVAA, Tasmania
on the funeral service of Padre (Father) Bill Egan.

"Well, What an experience.
Started at St Finn Barr's Church Launceston.
Full Mass 35 Priests , From Archbishop down, including Victorian priests.  Spectacular  650 plus people 1 3/4 hrs later we left with honour guard 100 metres long down the road.

This was led by John Wright (State President VVAA Tasmania) and myself .

Then 100 Kilometres to Fingal;  another church service with 20 Priests + 150 people.
Then to the grave side 1 kilometre away, another short service followed by the VVAA Burial Service, conducted by myself .

A very, very moving day covering from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

A Funeral that a lot of people will NEVER forget.

The respect and admiration he had in TAS / VIC, with Vietnam Vets and the community was immense.

Thank God I was part of it.  It may have been to much fuss for Bill but not anyone that was there.

 "Good Bye Mate"
Brian Harper OAM Tas Secretary VVAA".

Ivan passed away on 22 December 2004 after a 12 month battle with cancer.  Sadly, Ivan spoke very little of his military service to Judy, his partner of 25 years.  However, the Southport RSL gave timely assistance, as did Barry Somers who attended Ivan’s funeral service.

Hi Rod,

The notice posted is for our Ivan. He apparently had moved to 1/138 Whiting
street Labrador. His partner has little knowledge of his service so I have referred a Max
Wheat (ex Padre) to  Terry to see if we can find out any further info.I will attend and have
offered to conduct the  poppy service. I don't have enough detail to be able to contact our
guys on the coast but that  may be some thing we can address at a later date.

VALE: 214844 STUART W. KEYS

Stuey was first diagnosed with cancer in April 2004 and put up a good fight until he succumbed on 28 December.  Along with Family & Friends, John & Robin Vautin, Glenn & Pam Willmann and Rod & Julie Slater attended his funeral service.  John Vautin gave the Eulogy, which is included below:

I hope that no one will take offence if I lapse into telling mirthful tales so soon after Stu 's death.

Stu was after all, an irreverent and very funny man. It is difficult thus for me, a messmate and one time mortarman, not to crack a smile when thinking of Stu, even when standing within metres of his casket.  To me, Stu was a flawed genius. Some of you will say more flawed than genius, but that’s a little unfair. Stu’s genius came in his pursuit of perfection in mortar support for the battalion and in his brilliant, irreverent and often cutting wit. His flaws were human frailties. Like many funny men, he had a dark side. He would sometimes lapse into depression and some subordinates felt the brunt of his evil temper. He often regarded military law with contempt.

It is a basic tenet of mateship that we take the good with the bad and ultimately, he was one of us! It serves my present purpose to dwell upon his genius.

Stu’s crowning military achievement was in first shot accuracy achieved by 9RAR mortars. By force of personality he brow beat superiors into bringing up yards of blue metal, 44 gallon drums, concrete and more to stabilize his precious base plates. Aided by some of the finest mortar numbers ever to leave these lucky shores, Stu achieved first round accuracy that rivalled that of technically superior, officer commanded gun batteries. The gunners were cynically disbelieving, but I know this to be true.

Then there was Stu, the Comedian. I have vivid memories of Stu’s visit to an Adelaide nightclub where his razor sharp wit heckling caused a professional American comic to quit the stage. Stu took over the gig and patrons were treated to a rapid-fire humour routine. The act caused at least one fit of hysterics, and an unrecorded number of laughter induced incontinence incidents.

I can still see images of the look on straight-laced, Pommy Captain Lou Tizzard during lunch at Charlie Company one day. Stu was seated on Tizzard’s left. Tizzard was turned away, speaking to the person on his right. I think Tizzard had a lot of trouble accepting the irreverent way Australians treated their officers. Consequently, when Stu tugged his left sleeve and said “ Sir, Can I borrow your hanky?” a mild look of irritation crossed the Tizzard countenance. which quickly changed to one of horror, disdain and disbelief. As he turned, he saw Stu with a stuffed green olive protruding from each nostril! The diners collapsed in helpless mirth. Even super cool OC Laurie Lewis had trouble with self-control.

Stu old mate. You were unique. You will be missed. I shall always remember the good and forgive the lapses.

83A good shooting!  End of mission;  out.
