VALE
Ron Evans who served with 101 Field Workshops in SVN was critically
burnt when a petrol stove exploded, Ron's injuries were so serve that he
died 3 times while hospitalized. Ron's claim to fame in later years was
as the Training WO for Vehicle Recovery Wing at Bandiana.
Ron who was a close personal friend has at 57 has been taken by cancer,
in a battle that took 30 months. Just when Ron had been given the all
clear and was looking forward to enjoying life Ron had a reversal.
Within some weeks cancer of the lungs was diagnosed.
Ron's deterioration was rapid with fluid around the heart resulting in
Ron being moved to the Royal Melbourne where after a week in Critical
Care it was confirmed that the cancer was unstoppable and had spread to
his liver. At Ron's request life support was turned off and Ron passed
away PM on the 18th of August.
Ron's last hours were spent with his adult children of his first
marriage and partner Ruth.
The grave side service is at Wodonga Lawn Cemetery 2pm on Monday 23rd of
August.

Subject: WHY WE NEED ESO'S WITH ATTITUDE.

Ruth’s story highlights why there is a need for more than just one Ex Service Organisation (ESO) representing Veterans.

In 1968 Ruth’s first husband Brian Evans was sent to Vietnam, Brian was a welder by trade and worked in that trade in Vietnam. One of the compounds that Brian worked with was after Vietnam recognised as being highly carcinogenic, the compound gained access to Brian’s system though a skin rupture on his forehead.

Brian from that point on had a small rash that did not go away, after some years it started to grow, Brian went to the Army Doctor who sent him on his way with a cream.

The rash grew, Brian went back, more cream, the rash grew, finally when it had reached the size of 50cent piece, Brian demanded that it be taken more seriously.

Cancer, malignant and aggressive.

Brian just scraped in his 20 years in the Army, and under the DFRDB Superannuation Scheme it is better to take the money and run as the benefits to widows who husbands died in service penalise the partners of those with over 20 years service.

Due to Governments not changing and ESO’s not seeking change in the cash benefits paid to widows since WW2 of servicemen dying in service.

So Brian left the Army and applied for TPI, which came through 2 days before he died.

Ruth was left with 3 children and an income insufficient to raise 3 children.

Brian had been an active member of his local RSL; nothing was heard from them during Brian’s illness or upon his death or in the years after.

Legacy, nothing, and with that nothing no advice on the benefits available to War Widows with children.

The TPI Association of Queensland, nothing.

Ruth went to work and got on with the business of raising the kids.

The obvious answer is why did she not ask? To ask you have to know who to ask. We usually ask questions when invited, some organisation’s would rather you did not ask.

In 1990 Ruth came to Wodonga to visit and stayed, partnering Brian’s brother Ron (Shorty), himself a Vietnam Veteran who was critically burnt in Vietnam and completed 20 years, mainly as the Recovery Vehicle Training WO at Bandiana.

In meeting people within the Vietnam & Associated Veterans Club, Ruth found out that Shorty was eligible for the Service Pension which Shorty maintained that he did not know, and that DVA never told him.

Getting Shorty to sign the forms was another thing.

Ruth also met a Legacy member who asked her what help she was receiving for the granddaughter she was raising, opening further doors.

Ron passed away on the 18th of August 2004. I and most others credit Ruth with adding to Ron’s quality of life and putting up with his strong willed ways and caring for him through the last 2 and half pain filled years.

Ruth is not a special person, just some one who did not know the questions to ask, and what to expect from those organisation’s who claim substantial public subsidies for their operations.

In 1985 at the time of Brian’s death, the major ESO’s and the then Veterans Affairs were fat, bloated and lazy, no one challenged them and a cozy co-existence between Government and the ESO’s was more important than the welfare of the persons that they represented.

Only with advent of the alternative ESO’s, representing National Servicemen, Vietnam Veterans, Peacekeepers and so on has it been forced on the older ESO’s to look out side their envelope and offer the services that they receive public support and good will for.

I encourage you to use Ruth’s story when someone say’s, “We only need one organisation representing Veterans”.

Lloyd

Dear Fellow Gunners and Friends

Sadly, this has been a bad fortnight for the Gunners.  A third member, George Gardner left our ranks last Friday, 20 August.  Many of you will appreciate that he has been going downhill suffering from emphysema for a number of months, so it should not come as a shock that he has now succumbed.  His quality of life has been poor, being on oxygen for up to 16 hours per day, so in many ways this is a blessed escape.

George Gardner was born in Newtown, Sydney on 10 December 1942 and worked in odd jobs, including glass blowing before, at barely 17 years of age, he enlisted in the Australian Regular Army on 12 April 1960.  After basic and trade training he was posted to 1st Field Regiment RAA at Holsworthy where, in 1965 he departed with 'A' Field Battery for service at Terendak in Malaysia.  As a bombardier on the guns at this time, George was noticed for his reliability, solidarity, sense of humour and a tendency to really enjoy life when off duty.  His professionalism was rewarded by a posting to the 1st Recruit Training Battalion as an instructor on return to Australia in 1967.  Further, his good performance led to promotion to temporary sergeant in 1968 before he left 1 RTB to return to the world of gunnery.

In September 1968, Sergeant Gardner joined 4th Field Regiment RAA at its new home in Townsville as a gun sergeant in 106th Field Battery.  The beginning of 1970 saw 106 relieve the 105th Field Battery in Vietnam and George was again on overseas service.  His battery commander, (now retired Brigadier) David Gilroy recalls Sergeant Gardner as a very reliable, good leader and a 'great nurturer of soldiers'.  He is also remembered for being a colourful character with a dry sense of humour and one who 'liked to play when off duty'.  Nasho Bombardier Alan Thompson says that George was 'hard, efficient and popular'.  Alan also remembers a time at the Horseshoe when one of the soldiers was being slightly out of order and George reminded him that he should watch his step as 'the only difference between Gardner and God was that God was taller'.  Forward Observer Denis Byrne states that he always ordered George's Delta Gun to adjust close targets because he had the utmost faith in the sergeant's capabilities.

At the end of 1972, George was posted to the School of Artillery as an instructor.  It was there that I believe I first met this man.  As the only sergeant instructor amongst a bevy of warrant officers, George held his own for professionalism and dedication.  He worked with me on an Air Observer's Course and was one of the more sober members of a long an boozy drive back with Army pilots from a shoot at the Naval gunnery range, Beecroft.  As such he was the key assistant in helping our poor Kiwi exchange WO to his front door and facing the wrath of his missus.  The next year with a well earned promotion to warrant officer, George assisted me on the Warrant Officers' Gunnery Course.  These students were hard nuts, but they were all taken in his stride.  This was a particularly successful course, due in no small part to the time and dedication which WO Gardner contributed.

In late 1976 George was posted to the 5th/11th Field Regiment RAA (Army Reserve) in Brisbane as a Sergeant Major Instructor in Gunnery.  He performed to the high standards that were his hallmark and 12 months later was rewarded with an appointment of battery sergeant major of 101st Field Battery at 1st Field Regiment RAA.  For the next two years, BSM Gardner not only raised the standards of the junior NCOs within his battery, but brought great compassion and understanding in his firm but fair dealings with the Diggers in the 101st.

After eleven years in the regimental stream, fate identified a warrant officer class one vacancy in the proof and experimental world and on promotion to WO1, George became the Master Gunner of P&EE, Port Wakefield.  His commanding officer (now retired Colonel) Denis Byrne commended George on his smooth transition and recalls how he was well respected by both the military and civilian staff at the range.  Denis states that George was a good family man and mixed as easily socially as he did technically and regimentally.  In addition, the ability to sort out soldiers' problems was a high point of his service at Wakefield.

1981 saw WO1 Gardner back at the School of Artillery as the Master Gunner of Gunnery Wing.  He was a most reliable backstop and meticulous administrator to his Senior Instructors, (now retired Major General) Paul Stevens and (now retired Brigadier) Peter Kilpatrick.  Killer remembers his Master Gunner as an 'ever cheerful quiet achiever'.  George separated from the Army on 29 April 1983 after 23 years of meritorious service.

In civvy street, Mr Gardner worked in a number of positions within the NSW Attorney General's Department  until ill health forced him to retire.  Emphysema led him on a fairly steep downhill path over the last 12 months and he has now been released from the pain, suffering and frustration of this debilitated life.

George's final parade will be on Wednesday 25 August 2004 at the Greenway Memorial Gardens, Avoca Drive, Green Point (near Gosford), NSW at 1 pm or 1300 hours.  A wake will also be held at that location.  He is survived by his devoted wife, Dianne, daughters Debra and Donna, and son Michael.  Dianne's contact details are:

Hi Peter,

Thanks for keeping us up to date on Paddy's progress, it sounds like he is well and truly on the mend.

On another, related, matter. I received advice yesterday that ex POQMG Dave Shakeshaft passed away in the early hours of yesterday morning, after being diagnosed with Cancer of the Oesophagus less than 3 weeks ago. He has been living in Bargo, NSW for some years.

I served with Dave at Recruit School, Cerberus and on Vampire from 1976 through to 1978 and I know he also served on MV/HMAS Jeparit in the late 60's. He is survived by his wife Caroline and sons, Sean, Ryan and Nathan. I'm sure there will be some ex-shipmates who would want to know this.

Thanks Peter,

Warren

Nick, Rusty Smith details,

H R Smith  (Harley Robert) 2014292.  12 Greenbury CRT, Morayfield 4506. He told me once that he was involved with developing the wire dipole antenna some of us carried. That is the one that wound up onto the plastic bits with the distance marks on it etc.

Cheers

After returning to Bris in May Rusty was diagnosed with a lung Tumor.  He had received Chemo and Radiation treatment and as such his immune system was weakened.  He contracted and infection and a collapsed lung complications and was in intensive care for the last 4-5 days. I spoke to Barb His wife on sunday morning and he was holding on with signs of improvement, talking etc. He passed away early this morning.

I forgot to mention he helped us cook for the Veterans Golf day.

Do you have any contact details for Trevor Hewitt who is ex 1RAR 65/66
