CUDMORE. _
Reverend Brigadier (RL) Gerald CUDMORE. _ Pontifical Funeral Mass for the repose of the soul
From RAA Source:
Dear Fellow Gunners and Friends
Sadly, Monsignor Gerald Anthony (Gerry) Cudmore AM
our old mate and good friend to so many Gunners passed away on 21 April
following the removal of life support systems required as the result of
a sudden and severe heart attack. He had only just celebrated his three
score years and ten (plus one) on 10 February.
Gerry joined the Army on full time duty in 1961 in
the Mornington area and quickly established a warm camaraderie with
staff and trainees at Portsea and Balcombe. He remained there till his
posting to the 1 RAR Group to go to Vietnam in 1965. Blokes from the
105th Field Battery fondly remember the 'padre on the bicycle' who
regularly conducted before-action masses using the bonnet of an American
jeep as his alter.
Chaplain Cudmore then spent a year in FARELF before
returning to Liverpool Area. Following a couple of years at
Puckapunyal, Gerry joined the character guidance section of the
Australian Chaplains Conference which again took him back to FARELF, saw
him living in the Officers' Mess at the School of Artillery at North
Head and all around Australia from then onwards. There were very few
Gunners who did not meet Father Cudmore in the late 1960s and 1970s.
His capabilities and nature eventually led him to the appointment of
Chaplain General of the Army.
Gerry retired from the military but continued
parish work with a vengeance in Melbourne and was the parish priest of
the Armadale & Toorak partnered parishes at the time of his untimely
death.
Like most of my Army generation, Gerry was a good
personal friend who would do anything for 'his Diggers'. His thoughtful
and astute advice to generations of students, subalterns and staff at
the School of Artillery was legendary. Our last personal contact was a
couple of years ago when he flew up to Brisbane to officiate at the
marriage of my daughter. We corresponded every Christmas and his
letters were always very warm and caring. I am well aware that he also
maintained contact with many other of his old Army mates.
Vale Gerry Cudmore - worker for God, guide for
Diggers and a wonderful friend and confidante.
Monsignor Cudmore will be on parade for the last
time on Tuesday 27 April at the Melbourne City Cathedral at 1100 hours.
I am happy to pass on any notes of condolence to his sister who lives in
Nambour.

Subject: VALE DAVE NEGLINE
Dear Fellow Gunners and Friends
Sadly, I am contacting you again with news of
another of our Gunner brethren who departed all too young for the Great
Gun Park. David Joseph 'Neggers' Negline (born 23.1.41) died suddenly
from a massive heart attack on 23 April 2004 whilst visiting his home
town of Newcastle for the ANZAC Day weekend. He had previously
sustained a couple of smaller heart attacks.
Dave graduated from the Officer Cadet School,
Portsea in December 1963 along with such other notables as Barrie Winsor,
Juergen Raasch, Dick Wickenden, Ian Reid and Ted Diro (PNG). 1st Field
Regiment RAA and 1st Recruit Training Battalion postings later he was
selected for the Long Physical Training Course in the UK. The payback
for this trip was, of course, almost three years as the Senior
Instructor PT at the School of Artillery. Dave returned to field
gunnery as a forward observer and then battery captain with 107th Field
Battery which included a tour of duty in Vietnam. On return, he moved
into the air defence stream becoming an early commander of the new
Redeye surface-to-air missile battery. His enthusiasm and pride led to
air defence weapons becoming widely employed throughout the field army
rather than guarding RAAF airfields. Before hanging up his spurs in
January 1983 as a major, Dave was on the instructional staff at the
Australian Joint Warfare Establishment. He then became a rather private
individual who devoted himself to his family.
Neggers will be remembered for his quiet, dry sense
of humour, his good-natured acceptance of jokes about a PT background
and 'gentle giant' size, for encouraging other field gunners to move to
air defence, and by the Diggers who enjoyed firing the Redeye missile
stocks he liberated before they grew mouldy on the shelves.
A Requiem Mass will be held at the Sacred Heart
Church, Wagga Wagga on Thursday 29 April 2004 at 12 noon. Dave is
survived by his wife Elizabeth (Liz) and children Paul, Julie, Richard
and Matthew. Liz's address is 2 Brunskill Road, Wagga Wagga, 2650.
My thanks to Dave's brother Graham and Chris Hunter
for contributions to this story.
Vale David Joseph Negline - field gunner, PT
instructor and air defence gunner. Called for higher duty at only 63
years of age.
